Holy Spirit is a term that refers to the Spirit of God. It first appears in the book of Genesis. In the first chapter, it says, “The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters” (Genesis 1:2); the “Spirit of God” is the Holy Spirit. The Hebrew word rúakh (רוּחַ), which means god or spirit, is written in Greek as pneuma (πνεῦμα) in the New Testament. Rúakh and pneuma also refer to wind, breath, and breathing.
