The Church of God in Lima, Peru, established in 1998—the year after overseas missions began—is the first Church of God in South America. The members here have firmly rooted their faith in God the Father and God the Mother, and they actively share the truth of the new covenant throughout the country and even in neighboring nations such as Ecuador and Venezuela, establishing a foundation for the gospel in South America.[1] Currently, there are churches in Peru, not only in major cities, but also in remote areas, including Santa Teresa in the Andes Mountains.[2][3]

The Church of God in Lima has long connected with local residents, practicing community service. In recognition of their contributions to community development, they have received awards and expressions of gratitude from various leaders, including the Deputy Speaker of Congress and the Mayor of Puente Piedra in Lima.

Emergency Relief

Church members in Lima deeply sympathize with those facing hardships and are quick to provide dedicated help. In early 2017, record-breaking rains from El Niño created over 1.3 million flood victims, leading to a state of emergency in 811 cities. After the rain ceased, members traveled to affected areas such as Huarmey, Chincha, Piura, and Trujillo, removing mud that covered buildings and streets, and distributing relief supplies, including drinking water and clothing.[4][5] Local government offices, including Huarmey City Hall, supported these efforts by providing meals to the volunteers, ensuring smooth recovery operations. Following the cleanup, members organized a large-scale beach cleanup at Aguadulce Beach, raising public awareness about the impacts of El Niño.[6]

When a major earthquake struck off the coast near Lima in August 2007, damaging numerous areas, members from the Church of God in Huancayo and others quickly responded by heading to Tambo de Mora, where recovery was progressing slowly. There, they built 10 wooden homes for displaced families and offered medical care, haircuts, and other services, bringing hope to those affected. Domingo Farfan Gonzales, Mayor of Tambo de Mora, expressed gratitude, saying, “It is truly fortunate to encounter people as devoted to service as you are.”[7]

In addition to these efforts, members actively participate in charity concerts organized by the Church of God in Faucett to support disaster survivors, and they regularly hold blood drives to alleviate blood shortages.[8]

Environmental Protection

Church members actively participate in environmental cleanup activities in urban streets, parks, and beaches, helping keep neighborhoods clean and pleasant. Local residents often encourage them, sometimes handing out ice water to the members who pick up litter cheerfully, even in hot weather.[9] In June 2014, members planted trees in the La Ensenada area, not only taking a lead in environmental protection but also inspiring greater environmental awareness among citizens.

Young adult members in the area dedicate their free time to environmental activities like street cleanups and tree planting.[10] In October 2018, ASEZ members attended an international forum hosted by the Church of God in Faucett to explore methods for achieving the SDGs, with a particular focus on environmental protection. The event welcomed representatives from the UN, Peru’s Ministry of Environment, the judiciary, police security officials, company executives, university presidents and professors, and medical professionals. Philippines Vice President Leni Robredo shared a video message, expressing appreciation for the young adults, saying, “It’s inspiring to see everyone sharing ideas and working together to end poverty and ensure prosperity and well-being for humanity.”[11][12]

Promoting Welfare

At the Church of God in Lima, Peru, church members regularly visit nursing homes and orphanages, or invite local seniors to the church for uplifting events like group dances and orchestra performances to bring joy to those who may feel isolated. At a senior appreciation event held at the church in late 2012, Felipe Ross, Mayor of Los Olivos, praised the members, saying, “Seeing the way you treat the elderly with love, it truly feels like witnessing Mother’s love in action.”[13]

ASEZ WAO members, the Young Adult Worker Volunteer Group, carried out the Heart to Heart Project to show appreciation for healthcare workers who have tirelessly protected public health since the onset of COVID-19. They gifted the medical staff at Cayetano Heredia National Hospital with support kits filled with handwritten letters and snacks. The healthcare workers responded to the young adults’ encouragement with a thumbs-up.[14] Additionally, members have painted school buildings to create clean and welcoming academic environments for students[15] and assisted in repairing homes for underprivileged families, demonstrating their commitment to public welfare.

Awards Received

The Church of God in Lima, committed to helping alleviate hardships faced by neighbors and society and creating a better world for all, has been honored with numerous awards in recognition of its efforts. The Vice President of Congress awarded the church a certificate of appreciation, noting that the members’ volunteer activities serve as a model for other religious groups and organizations.[16] The Mayor of Tambo de Mora and the Mayor of Puente Piedra in Lima also awarded plaques and certificates, commending the church’s community contributions.[17][18]

Additionally, government agencies and prominent institutions have recognized the members’ blood donations, with acknowledgments such as the certificate of appreciation from the Director of Santa Rosa Hospital in Puerto Maldonado.[19]
