In 1998, during the early period of missionary work in Asia, the truth of the new covenant was preached in Tokyo, leading to the establishment of the first Church of God in Japan. Members who received God Elohim collaborated with short- and long-term mission teams from Korea to actively spread the teachings of God the Father and God the Mother. Their efforts contributed to the establishment of churches in various cities, including Osaka, Kyoto, and Sendai.

According to research, Christians constitute 1.5% of Japan’s population, representing less than 0.1% of the global Christian population.[1] Members of the Church of God in Tokyo actively study the Bible and participate in the Overseas Visiting Group program, which allows them to visit Korea for in-depth exploration of the truth and the cultivation of Christian virtues. Deng Ge, a participant in the program, stated, “The Most High God personally set an example, allowing me to realize the meaning of humility, sacrifice, and love.”[2] Church members engage in various activities to apply Christ’s teachings in their families, churches, and society.

Japan, located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, is prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, typhoons, and heavy rainfall. In the summer of 2018, a typhoon brought intense rainfall to the western Japan region, particularly affecting Kurashiki City in Okayama Prefecture, where riverbanks overflowed, resulting in numerous casualties and displaced individuals. In response, members of the Church of God from Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Fukuoka, and other areas visited disaster shelters in Kurashiki to deliver daily necessities such as pillows and wet wipes. They also helped maintain a clean and comfortable environment for the evacuees by thoroughly cleaning the shelters.[3][4][5] In Japanese culture, where individuals are often reluctant to ask for help in urgent situations to avoid burdening others, the volunteers were praised for their thoughtful approach in offering assistance, becoming a model of compassion in society.[6]

In 2014, they provided winter clothing to earthquake victims, offering both comfort and support. The Refugee Support Association, which received the clothing donations, expressed gratitude in a letter, stating, “The clothing donations were invaluable, as cold weather often worsens the health of refugees.”[7]

The Church of God in Tokyo actively participates in life-sharing initiatives through continual blood drives[8][9] and regular consolatory events for local elderly residents, as well as cleanup services for nursing homes.[10] The Director of Nursing Home, Takahashi Yuko commended the volunteers, noting, “The Church of God is the first to clean this thoroughly, treating it as their own home and even cleaning areas that are not visible.”[11]

The university student volunteer group ASEZ and the young adult worker volunteer group ASEZ WAO members participate in environmental cleanups during vacations and holidays, focusing on maintaining cleanliness on campus and surrounding streets.[12][13] Since the outbreak of COVID-19, they have initiated the “Heart to Heart” project, which involves delivering handwritten letters and snacks to medical staff working to ensure public safety, as a gesture of support.

The Church of God in Tokyo, having quietly served the local community for an extended period, has received certificates of appreciation from various organizations, including the Tokyo Red Cross,[14] the Tokyo Shinjuku Liaison Committee,[15] and the Serabi Ikegami Elderly Welfare Facility.[16]
