Church of God Pastor Kim Joo-cheol’s Speech at the UN
Pastor Kim Joo-cheol gave a speech at the CERF High-Level Conference during the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly. CERF is a global fund established by the United Nations to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by disasters, terrors, and other tragedies. CERF has partnership with regional governments, corporations, and foundations as well as 126 UN Member States. It also provides relief and restoration funds to about 100 countries.[2]
About 200 representatives and officials from UN agencies, UN Member States, and non-governmental organizations attended the conference. The former UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, opened the conference and the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Stephen O’Brien, presided over the event. Ugandan Minister for Foreign Affairs Sam Kahamba Kutesa, Danish Minister for Development Cooperation, Ulla Tornaes, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, and UN Resident Coordinator in Uganda, Rosa Malango served as designated panelists.[3]
Pastor Kim Joo-cheol, who was invited by the United Nations as a representative of the Church of God, introduced the church in his speech, “The Church of God believes in God the Father and God the Mother testified in the Bible and keeps the truth of the new covenant established by Jesus Christ.” He explained, “All the Church of God humanitarian activities carried out in various regions around the world such as environmental cleanup, food aid, and emergency relief, come from the heart of Mother.” He promised continued cooperation and support, standing for CERF activities and other entities of the UN that help global citizens in need.
Background of the Invitation
Lisa Doughten, Chief of CERF Secretariat, said, “The Church of God is the first church to be invited to this conference.” The background of the unprecedented invitation was the Church of God’s dedicated charity and volunteer activities. In June 2010, the Church of God donated 100,000 USD to CERF to support the recovery efforts from the earthquake in Haiti. In 2015, the church also delivered relief goods to the earthquake-stricken areas in Nepal, and in total, about 15,000 church members volunteered to carry out the recovery efforts. The UN highly praised the Church of God for its transnational efforts to help those in need around the world.[4] In November 2016, when the Church of God in Denver, CO, held a charity concert to help earthquake victims in Haiti, Lisa Doughten, Chief of CERF Secretariat, in her celebratory video message, said, “I sincerely thank you for showing your constant efforts to let people know that the world is one and friends, regardless of country, race, religion, community, and status, through your continuous disaster recovery and volunteer activities.”[5]
