The Church of God hosted the “Global Leadership Conference for the Female Pastoral Staff” at the New Jerusalem Pangyo Temple in Korea from April 27 to May 1, 2019. The event brought together female pastoral staff members from 52 countries who support their churches and members as wives of pastoral staff. Through various programs, participants sought the roles of the pastoral staff in alignment with God’s will, gaining insights into servant leadership and sharing experiences and knowledge with one another.

Outline

For the faith of church members and the proper growth of the church, there are individuals who support both the members and the church behind the scenes, alongside the pastoral staff. These are the female pastoral staff members who dedicate themselves to the gospel with humility, serving as the wives of pastoral leaders. To help them carry out their roles with the heart of Mother, the Church of God hosted the “Global Leadership Conference for the Female Pastoral Staff.”

From April 27 to May 1, 2019, the program was held at the New Jerusalem Pangyo Temple. Female pastoral staff members from more than 400 Korean churches and from 52 other countries, including the United States, Peru, the Philippines, Mongolia, and India, participated in the conference. Through various programs such as the “Happy Church Global Conference,” the “Arise & Shine 2019 Global Bible Seminar” (2nd), and the “Female Pastoral Staff Forum,” participants deepened their faith and broadened their spiritual perspectives.[1]

In a special lecture, General Pastor Kim Joo-cheol highlighted the importance of words and tolerance as essential virtues for leadership among female pastoral staff. He emphasized the need for a gentle and humble attitude, along with a mindset that prioritizes God’s will above all else. He stated, “Today, the movement to preach to seven billion is progressing rapidly. Just as the sea accepts all impurities and purifies them, we should all cultivate a broad mind capable of embracing differences in thoughts and perspectives while overlooking the faults of others. Only then can we achieve true unity.”

Deaconess Sindy Quintero from Baltimore, MD, U.S. shared her thoughts, saying, “Through this program, Mother showed us a complete picture of our roles and how we should endure. I will dedicate the rest of my life to the heavenly family, following Mother’s example and setting aside self-centered thoughts and actions.”[2]

Happy Church Global Conference

On April 28, the “Happy Church Global Conference” was held in the seminar room of the New Jerusalem Pangyo Temple. The conference aimed to discuss the role and attitude of female pastoral staff, particularly as wives of pastoral leaders, in creating a church filled with happiness alongside the members. Seven presenters from six countries, including the U.S., Nepal, and Zimbabwe, shared examples from their churches, while panelists and attendees engaged in discussions, exchanging various viewpoints. The main themes of the discussion were communication and Mother. “Adapting to a foreign environment and new lifestyle wasn’t easy for me, but I overcame language and cultural barriers by always treating the members with a smile, following Mother’s example,” said Elderess Park Hyeon-ock from Pune, India, in her presentation. Deaconess Silindile Makhanya from Harare, Zimbabwe, originally from South Africa, shared her experience of communication, saying, “I learned traditional recipes from the local members and cooked with them. This made them feel a greater sense of belonging and responsibility, and helped me better understand their sentiments.”

Through the conference, participants were reminded that the duty of female pastoral staff is to care for the members alongside the pastoral staff. When asked about the role of female pastoral staff, Elderess Stephanie Zapien from El Paso, TX, U.S., said, “What a female pastoral staff does is similar to the role of a mother at home. Like a mother, we should listen to the stories of members living in various environments and encourage them with love.”[3]

On May 1, the last day of the event, a Korean culture experience event was held for overseas female pastoral staff members. Together with the overseas visiting groups from each country, they experienced traditional Korean culture and felt the love of Mother reflected in it. They visited a Hanok (Traditional Korean House) Village in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, where they made traditional Korean foods such as bibimbap and songpyeon. They also enjoyed the beauty of Korean tradition by wearing elegant hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) and strolling through the lantern-lit streets of the Yongin Korean Folk Village. They curiously watched straw sandals being made on the workshop street and also participated in folk games such as yut-nori and tu-ho.

Deaconess Tumiso Buyeye said, “My country, South Africa, is called the ‘rainbow country’ because of its diversity, with more than ten languages spoken by various ethnic groups. Just like bibimbap, a traditional Korean dish made by mixing many ingredients together, if everyone unites with Mother’s love, we can achieve harmony not only among the church members but also with all people.”[5]
