Features
Canada is the second-largest country in the world[1] and features diverse topography, including canyons, plateaus, and the famous Rocky Mountains, which extend into Colorado, the United States. As a result, the country is home to 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks and Gros Morne National Park.
Canada is a multicultural country where many ethnicities coexist,[2] striving for a “mosaic society” that respects cultural diversity. Members of the Church of God in Edmonton contribute to the warmth of Canadian society by following the teachings of Mother. They diligently practice love, ensuring that no one is left behind and that everyone’s personal values are respected. Since the early 2000s, many members have visited Korea through the Overseas Visiting Group program, where they experienced the love of God Elohim firsthand and cultivated their faith and selflessness. Upon returning to Canada, they engage with their neighbors, fostering unity and harmony and creating a warm social atmosphere.[3]
Edmonton, the economic hub of Alberta, is home to vital industries such as oil and gas. The city can experience temperatures as low as -41°C during the winter. Known as the “City of Festivals,” Edmonton hosts over 50 festivals each year, including “Ice on Whyte,” where unique ice artworks can be seen, and international ski and skating competitions are held.[4]
The members invigorate every corner of the community through active volunteer services, following the Bible’s teaching to “be the salt and light of the world.” In December 2012, members visited Venta Care Centre to share the love of God the Mother by performing a concert for elderly residents who were facing a challenging winter. The elderly enjoyed a wonderful time with the Church of God members, laughing all day, watching dance performances by young adults, and listening to joyful hymns from the children’s choir. The volunteer manager of the centre remarked, “It’s fantastic. I’ve never seen these elderly people smile like this before.”[5] In January of the following year, they visited CapitalCare Dickensfield, where they performed songs, dances, and skits to encourage the elderly, continuing their commitment to supporting senior neighbors in their community.[6]
The Church of God in Edmonton actively supports disaster-affected areas and leads efforts to maintain a clean local environment. In June 2013, floods in Alberta caused a state of emergency in 32 regions, displacing over 100,000 people.[7] Members of the church visited High River, one of the hardest-hit areas, to assist with recovery efforts by removing belongings from homes and clearing out mud. When the main water source became polluted and clean water was scarce, they donated 6,000 bottles of water to emergency shelters in collaboration with local neighbors and grocery stores.[8] In recognition of their dedicated service, the Province of Alberta awarded the members the “Flood Heroes” award.[9]
Additionally, the Church of God in Edmonton received the Tidiness Award[10][11] during the 2014 Edmonton in Bloom Awards for their cleanup activities, including removing graffiti from exterior walls and collecting trash. They also received a certificate of appreciation from the Alberta Council in 2013 for their contributions.[12]
