The Church of God in Quezon City, Philippines, is established in Quezon City, Metro Manila. It was established in August 2004 and relocated to a new temple in April 2012. Its official name is the World Mission Society Church of God in Quezon City, Philippines.

Features

The Philippines, a country of over 7,500 islands on the western edge of the Pacific Ocean, has a population exceeding 100 million. It is primarily divided into three regions: northern Luzon, central Visayas, and southern Mindanao. Quezon City located in the southwestern part of Luzon, is named after the country’s first president, Manuel Quezon. From 1948, Quezon City served as the capital of the Philippines until it became one of the 17 administrative regions of Metro Manila established in November 1975. It is the largest city in the country by both area and population.[1]

Members of the Church of God in Quezon City take great pride in receiving the New Covenant established by Jesus Christ, especially as it is practiced in the Philippines, the only Catholic country in Asia. Additionally, to personally experience the love of God the Mother, many members visit Korea as part of overseas visiting groups. One member who visited Korea in 2010 shared her resolution, saying, “What the world needs most now is the love of Heavenly Mother. I will practice giving love when I return to my country.”[2]

Based on the love they have received from God the Father and God the Mother, the members extend a helping hand to neighbors in need and strive for the development and harmony of the local community. As a result, they received a certificate of recognitions from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Mayor of Quezon City, and the Apolinario Mabini Award from the Secretary of Health.

Emergency Relief

The members of the Church of God in Quezon City conduct relief efforts for communities and neighbors affected by unexpected disasters. In January 2020, when the Taal Volcano erupted in the Tagaytay area, residents living within a 14 km (8.7 mi) radius evacuated.[3] The Church of God in Quezon City promptly delivered relief supplies, including drinking water, rice, mats, and blankets, to evacuees staying in temporary shelters.[4]

When Super Typhoon Haiyan caused widespread damage across the Philippines in November 2013, there was a manpower shortage for packing the flood relief supplies arriving from around the world. In response, members of the Church of God volunteered for two days at the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Relief Supply Center. The packing effort involved not only members from Quezon City but also members from local churches in Las Piñas, Mandaluyong, along with over 1,000 participants from nearby universities. The members also prepared approximately 2,000 meals for the volunteers. The host organizations, including the Quezon City Hall, expressed their gratitude to the Church of God members for their proactive and organized volunteering, providing buses and transportation allowances as support.[5]

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the members of the Church of God in Quezon City have continued their community support to assist neighbors facing hardships, donating 500 kg (1,100 lbs) of rice and 200 cans of food to families in quarantine.[6]

Environmental Protection

The members of the Church of God in Quezon City are dedicated to preventing environmental pollution and creating a clean, healthy community.[7] Members of ASEZ, the University Student Volunteer Group and ASEZ WAO, the Young Adult Worker Volunteer Group, regularly participate in cleaning activities during their holidays.[8][9][10] In May 2018, ASEZ WAO members from Korea participated in a cleanup around the Cubao area. City officials joined the initiative, and the Mayor of Quezon City, Herbert Bautista, who highly appreciated these activities, invited the members to city hall the next day and introduced their efforts at a regular meeting.[11]

ASEZ WAO regularly conducts cleanup activities at Manila Bay and implements the No More GPGP Project to raise awareness about the seriousness of plastic waste. In January 2019, alongside with the Church of God in Las Piñas and others, they participated in a government-organized cleanup event to help restore Manila Bay, which had been severely affected by garbage. The Vice Minister of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources expressed gratitude for their environmental efforts and indicated his intention to participate in future activities.[12][13][14] In November 2021, as part of the Mother's Forest Project, they planted 300 trees in alliance with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to protect the ecosystem in the La Mesa Nature Reserve.[15]

ASEZ Activities

ASEZ members in Quezon City actively engage in various activities to address global issues based on their faith and knowledge gained through their school education. In January 2019, they, along with members from neighboring cities, were invited to the General Assembly of the Philippine National Police Chaplain Service, and hosted the ASEZ Global Crime Prevention Forum. They introduced the Reduce Crime Together Project in front of high-ranking officials, including the Vice Minister of the Department of National Defense, the Deputy Secretary of the Central Police Agency, and the Chief of the Philippine National Police. The officials resonated with ASEZ's efforts and expressed their support.[16]

In December 2017, the Church of God in Quezon City organized the ASEZ Global Forum for the implementation of the SDGs. Over 700 students from local universities attended, with notable speakers such as Lara Soto, a marine chemist and professor at the University of the Philippines, and Antonio Velasco, former Director General of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources who highlighted the roles of young people in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).[17][18] In December of the following year, they organized another event to promote both the Reduce Crime Together Project and the implementation of the SDGs. Among the attendees were Geruncio Ilagan, Deputy Chief of the Metro Manila Emergency Volunteer Corps, and City Councilor Ranulfo Ludovica, who signed MOUs with ASEZ and commended the members for offering innovative, humanitarian solutions with Mother’s love.[19] That same year, university student members participated in the ASEZ Climate Change Response Conference held at the New Jerusalem Temple in Pangyo, Korea, to discuss global strategies for combating climate change.[20]

Neighborly Love

The members of the Church of God in Quezon City are committed to serving the community, ensuring that no one is left behind. In November 2015, they organized an event at the Lung Center of the Philippines to bring comfort to patients with rare disease.[21] In July 2013, they visited a children's hospital, distributing dolls collected through donation campaigns, bringing joy and hope to sick children.[22] In 2014, they hosted an event for elderly residents, treating them to performances like dances and choral singing, followed by a shared meal. The seniors expressed their heartfelt gratitude, remarking, "You’ve made us happy. We will never forget today.”[23]

They also regularly organize blood drives with local blood banks, promoting life-sharing initiatives and encouraging local residents to participate in blood donations.[24][25][26][21][27] After the outbreak of COVID-19, ASEZ WAO delivered encouragement kits containing handwritten letters and snacks to medical workers and others on the front line of the pandemic, while adhering to government distancing guidelines.[28][29]

Awards Received

As a result of providing diverse volunteer services to the communities and neighbors in accordance with the “Teachings of Mother,” the Church of God in Quezon City has received multiple awards from government institutions. The Department of the Interior,[30] the Department of Environment and Natural Resources,[31] the Department of Health,[32] Quezon City Hall,[33][34][35] and other institutions have presented citations and appreciation certificates in recognition of the Church of God's contributions to regional development. Additionally, the Church of God in Quezon City has been helping supply of blood for patients in need through regular blood drives, resulting in awards from the Director of the Heart Center[36] and the National Lung Center.[37]

In 2019, the Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council selected the Church of God in Quezon City as the top civil society organization and awarded them the Gawad Kalasag Award.[38] At the end of 2017, Quezon City Hall selected the Church of God as one of the outstanding volunteer organizations of the year and presented a citation from the Mayor of Quezon City. The Mayor stated that the members have made significant contributions to the economic and social development of Quezon City.[39][40][41]
