Features
New Zealand, located in the southwestern Pacific, comprises the North Island, South Island, and several smaller surrounding islands. The country is renowned for its well-preserved natural landscapes, including Tongariro National Park on the North Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Southern Alps, which run along the spine of the South Island, and the expansive Canterbury Plains to the east. These diverse environments have fostered growth in agriculture, forestry, and tourism.[1]
The Church of God in Christchurch, located on the South Island, was established in September 2007, following the initial spread of the new covenant gospel to Auckland on the North Island. As the members grew, the church moved to its current location in May 2009 to accommodate the increasing number of members. The members, having accepted Elohim God and embraced the truth of the new covenant, actively maintain their faith with a sense of pride, enthusiasm, and vitality. The Church of God in Christchurch engages in gospel preaching and volunteer activities, embodying a Christian spirit by sharing God’s love with the local communities.
New Zealand, renowned for its unspoiled natural environment, actively implements environmental protection measures at a national level, with environmental consciousness fostered from a young age through education.[2] Church members play a leading role in regional environmental cleanup activities, volunteering to maintain clean streets.[3] After the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, they consistently contributed to restoring the damaged environment. In January 2012, members partnered with local parliamentarians in Shirley-New Brighton, engaging in efforts to remove trash and weeds.[4] Former Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker, who participated in the initiative, described the members as “the saints who are helping their neighbors with a pure heart without expecting anything in return are a gift from Heavenly Mother.”[5][6]
The volunteer activities of local young adults are particularly noteworthy. In October 2018, approximately 50 members of ASEZ, the University Student Volunteer Group, organized a cleanup near the University of Canterbury, removing litter such as fallen leaves, plastic pipes, and discarded furniture, covering a 5 km (3.1 mi) radius.[7] The ASEZ WAO Young Adult Worker Volunteer Group, also initiated the “No More GPGP” project on multiple occasions, educating citizens about the serious impact of plastic waste.
The Church of God in Christchurch has been recognized for its contributions to community service and environmental protection through diverse activities, including cleanup efforts, free meal services for earthquake victims, and blood drives. In May 2014, the church received a commendation from a Member of Parliament.[8] It has also been awarded a certificate of appreciation from the Christchurch City Council,[9][10] the Local Group Award from the New Zealand environmental organization Keep New Zealand Beautiful (KNZB),[11] and certificates of appreciation from both the Mayor of Christchurch and the Chairperson of the Keep Christchurch Beautiful (KCB) branch of KNZB.[12][13][14]
