Features
In 2003, during the Daegu Summer Universiade in the Republic of Korea (South Korea), Guatemala and members of the Church of God in the Republic of Korea shared warmth beyond national borders and cultural differences. The church members warmly welcomed the Guatemalan athletes upon their arrival, offering enthusiastic support, uplifting their spirits, and providing comfort to ease their loneliness and homesickness. Expressing his gratitude, Director Mario remarked, “Thanks to the kindness and warm hearts of the Korean people, I felt as if I had been their friend for years,” adding, “I will take your warm hearts back to my homeland and never forget them.”[1] During the event, H.E. Manuel Arturo Téllez Miralda, Guatemalan Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, visited the church’s supporters headquarters to personally convey his appreciation.[2]
The bond between the Church of God and Guatemala deepened further in 2006 with the establishment of a church in the country. As the heart of the Mayan civilization and a cornerstone of Central American history, Guatemala holds immense cultural and historical significance. Its capital, Guatemala City, is the largest city on the continent and enjoys a pleasant climate due to its plateau location. In this land rich with both history and natural beauty, members of the Church of God in Guatemala City share the hidden treasure of the Bible—Christ—while actively engaging in volunteer efforts to support the local community.
Continuously committed to public service, volunteers of all ages participate in street cleanups in key locations, including the Presidential Palace, Pamplona Street, and areas surrounding Hospital Roosevelt, contributing to a cleaner and more pleasant environment. Their blood drives ensure a stable blood supply and save lives in urgent need of transfusions in collaboration with the Guatemalan Red Cross.
Beyond environmental and health initiatives, they also extend a helping hand in times of crisis. In 2011, when an earthquake struck Guatemala, members swiftly responded by delivering essential supplies—rice, snacks, clothing, and drinking water—to 100 affected households in Cuilapa, Santa Rosa. The following January, they coordinated with Barberena Municipality to provide relief to 46 earthquake-affected families, carrying supplies on foot through rugged mountain paths inaccessible to vehicles. Their dedication was recognized by Canal 7, and the Mayor of Barberena honored them with a certificate of appreciation.[3]
In November 2012, another devastating earthquake hit San Marcos, collapsing hundreds of buildings, including police stations and courthouses. The following month, the Church of God members donated 800 blankets to the San Marcos Departmental Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED-San Marcos) to support displaced residents.[4] The coordinator expressed deep gratitude, stating, “This is the most essential gift for residents who have lost their homes and are living in tents.”[5] During the COVID-19 pandemic, members prioritized the health and safety of the local community, donating 10,000 face masks to Guatemala Municipality.
In recognition of their unwavering commitment to serving their neighbors, the Church of God in Guatemala City received a certificate of appreciation from both the Guatemala Municipality and the Guatemalan Red Cross.[6][7]
