Greece is a country in southern Europe, situated at the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula, comprising both the mainland and numerous surrounding islands. Historically known as Hellas, its official name is the Hellenic Republic. Greece has had a profound influence on global politics, culture, and philosophy. It is recognized as the birthplace of democracy, the cradle of Hellenistic civilization, and the first host of the Olympic Games.
Greece has a deep connection to the New Testament. The Greek language was used in the writing of the New Testament, and Luke, the author of Acts, recorded the missionary journeys of the apostles in several Greek cities. During his second and third missionary journeys, Apostle Paul stayed in Greece, spreading the gospel while working as a tentmaker in Corinth (Korinthos).[2] In Philippi, Lydia, a seller of purple cloth, opened her heart and accepted the word.[3] The noble-minded people of Berea received the gospel with sincerity and examined the Scriptures daily.[4] The Bible also describes how the people of Athens, who once worshiped an "unknown god," came to know the true God the Creator, the Lord of heaven and earth.[1]
The members of the Church of God in Athens, Greece, give thanks to the fact that they are living on the stage of the apostles’ gospel preaching in the early Church era. With faith and courage, they boldly preach the gospel, following in the footsteps of the apostles. Even today, many people come to the Church of God, seeking wisdom that leads to salvation.
Athens is one of the world’s most historically rich cities, with ancient ruins scattered throughout. Notable landmarks include the Acropolis, an ancient city located 150 meters above sea level; the National Archaeological Museum, Athens, which houses over 11,000 artifacts from prehistoric times to the Roman Empire; and the Agora, an ancient marketplace that once served as the political, economic, and cultural center of the city.
Members actively participate in environmental cleanup efforts in Athens, a city where ancient civilization remains well-preserved. They have consistently carried out street-cleaning activities in the central area of Ampelokipoi and, even during the COVID-19 pandemic, followed safety protocols while cleaning Zografou Street. Members of ASEZ, the Church of God University Student Volunteer Group, also conducted a campus cleanup at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In addition to these efforts, they engage in various volunteer activities to support their local community, driven by the sacrifice of God the Father and the love of God the Mother.
In 2019, a missionary from the Church of God in Athens, who visited Korea for the General Assembly, attended the exhibition “Father’s True Heart.” Reflecting on the experience, he said, “The tearful efforts and sacrifices of a father trying to save his sick child, even during war, deeply moved me. I believe that with the love of God the Father, I can fulfill my mission as a pastoral staff member, no matter the circumstances.”[5]
Ioannis, a participant in the 57th Overseas Visiting Group, shared his experience: “Every Church of God I visited in Korea was bright and clean. The Korean members welcomed us with warm and cheerful smiles. Through the sermon, I was reminded that God blesses us when we are united with Jerusalem. This strengthened my hope for heaven and deepened my understanding of Mother’s love.”[6]
