Characteristics

New York is the center of the commerce industry, economic development and trade, education, and culture in the United States.[1][2] Furthermore, the state has many famous sights such as Niagara Falls, the Walkway Over the Hudson, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Empire State Building, which attract many tourists from around the world. New Windsor is on the west side of the lower Hudson River, which runs across the state. It is a place that provides peace of mind for those who do not want to live in congested cities. The Church of God in New Windsor is surrounded by green pastures and forests as vast as thirty soccer fields.[3] It has convenient facilities such as a soccer field, a basketball court, a playground, and a pond. Church members have meetups, camps, and events here to build unity among each other and their neighbors in the surrounding area.[4][5]

Despite living busy lives, the members diligently do the gospel work in New York, preaching the new covenant with a fervent mind and a positive attitude. The church established pre-branch locations that play a key role in delivering God’s love to neighboring countries such as Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.[6] In addition, following the words of Christ who says to be the salt and light of the world, the members participate in various volunteer services to support their communities.[7]

Emergency Relief

The members of the Church of God in New Windsor participate in relief efforts to bring comfort and hope to their neighbors who were impacted by sudden disasters. When major hurricanes such as Irene (2011), Sandy (2012), and Ida (2021) hit North America, the members immediately went to the affected areas and carried out recovery activities with other local members of the church.[8][9]

When Puerto Rico suffered from Hurricane Maria, the church provided daily necessities and medical supplies.[10] In 2013, more than 1,200 members from the northeastern region obtained the government-approved Community Emergency Response Team [CERT] certification to help their neighbors through more rapid and systematic relief efforts.[11][12][13]

Martine Denis, the Executive Director of the Greater New York Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, commended the church members and said, “They made patients’ lives happy.”[14][15][16]

The church holds diverse events for its neighbors and the local community. The annual Hudson Valley Kimchi Festival consists of various programs such as kimchi making, the tasting of national dishes, playing traditional games, and Taekwondo and Samulnori performances. Over the years, more various dishes and traditional cultures from all over the world, such as the Caribbean, South America, and Europe, have been included, gaining favorable reviews from guests.[17][18][19] The church has also prepared dinner and a concert for firefighters and soldiers who are devoted to local safety to express their gratitude and respect.[20][21][22][23] In addition, the church carries out blood drives to help its neighbors who are suffering from blood shortages.[24][25][26] Local blood banks have also expressed their gratitude to the members for donating healthy blood.[27][28]

Environmental Cleanups

The Church of God in New Windsor carries out environmental cleanups in the streets and around rivers and forests to maintain a clean and livable city.[29] They not only clean Times Square and the bike path along the Hudson River, but also polish and paint old tables and benches in parks and playgrounds in cooperation with local governments. In April 2017, during the painting volunteer service at Plum Point Park, a member of Congress visited and expressed his gratitude to the church members for their efforts.[30]

The church also made efforts to protect the major natural environments of the region by repairing dug-up roads on the Fahnestock State Park's hiking trails and cleaning the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park, Island Beach State Park, and Thomas Edison National Historical Park. In Jamaica Bay, church members from New Windsor and other New York locations continuously take the lead in preserving the ecosystem. “If all the young people in the world were like these Church of God volunteers, we got no problems,” said Don Riepe, Director of the American Littoral Society.[31]

Young Adult Volunteer Group Activities

Young adult members of the Church of God in New Windsor are proactive in solving social problems to make the world a better place. ASEZ, the university student volunteer group of the church, leads various forums to promote the happiness of mankind. In March 2021, a panel discussion was held on the subject of “words” that create hope, and shared the importance and value of using positive language. It was said that “the change of words is part of the big change that needs to take place in the world.”[32] In December 2020, in celebration of Human Rights Day, ASEZ held a forum virtually where university students and professors shared how to guarantee human rights, using their talents in their specific fields.[33][34]

ASEZ student members at Lehman College hosted a Crime Prevention Forum in 2019 to discuss students’ roles in preventing crime and violence. On that day, speakers included Karines Reyes, a member of the New York State Assembly, a Lehman College Associate Professor, and the Assistant Director of Campus Life. They signed an MOU to show their support for ASEZ, complimenting them for the activities they do because they bring hope to mankind.[35] Assembly member Reyes presented ASEZ with a proclamation for their efforts in the area, and shared how they take ownership of their community.[36]

In the summer of the same year, ASEZ held a concert under the theme, “Working Together for World Peace” at the Lincoln Center in Manhattan, New York. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness about ways people can implement the SDGs, the common goals adopted by the UN and the international community, through music. The event was attended by about 800 people from all walks of life. New York State Administrative Law Judge Regina A. Rinaldi said, “ASEZ will be able to change people and communities in the right direction with the heart of a mother.”[37][38]

ASEZ WAO, the young adult worker volunteer group of the church, are carrying out global projects such as the Green Workplace, Mother’s Forest, and No More GPGP to bring awareness about environmental issues. They have held environmental seminars to promote the importance of the role of individuals and companies in combating climate change, attracting sympathy and support from attendees.[39][40][41] In 2020, ASEZ WAO members from Korea came to New York and visited the UN Headquarters with the local members to have a conference on No More GPGP with Africa's director of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs [DPPA].[42]

ASEZ and ASEZ WAO members continue to carry out practical and sincere activities such as environmental cleanups and graffiti removal, as well as building awareness and finding solutions to social problems such as environmental pollution and crime.[43][44][45][46] Since the COVID-19 pandemic, they have supported daily prevention efforts and encouraged the medical staff that is working hard to prevent the spread of the virus. The church members working at the UN Headquarters held an online seminar for making face masks. With the participation of the UN staff and local business employees, they shared how to make a face mask out of clothes they don’t wear.[47] Young adult members of the Church of God in New Windsor are working together to overcome the global crisis by delivering snack gifts to the medical staff working on the frontline of the pandemic.
