Features
Manukau, located on the North Island of New Zealand, lies approximately 20 km southeast of central Auckland and is part of the Auckland metropolitan area. The region is home to a diverse population, including the indigenous Māori, Pacific Islanders, Europeans, and Asians, creating a rich multicultural environment.[1] The 4th Auckland Church of God, established in this area, actively promotes Christ’s love and service beyond national, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic boundaries.
To help preserve the local environment, the church signed an MOU with the Auckland Municipality and has been conducting continuous and systematic volunteer activities. In collaboration with local authorities, the church has identified and regularly cleaned areas in need of environmental maintenance.[2] Since its founding in 2017, members have undertaken large-scale cleanup efforts, including the removal of 1,000 kg of waste from Ray Small Park in Papakura in 2017,[3] and the cleanup of 2,000 kg of waste near Clendon Shopping Centre and 1,500 kg from Holmes Road Reserve in Manurewa in 2018.
ASEZ WAO, the young adult volunteer group of the Church of God, has played a key role in environmental protection.[4] As part of the No More GPGP project, ASEZ WAO members from the 4th Church of God in Auckland removed plastic waste from Kauri Point Reserve. In Wiri Stream Reserve, they planted 1,000 tree saplings under the Mother’s Forest initiative, supported by the Auckland City Council. They have also conducted Green Earth cleanup activities at locations such as Papakura Children’s Forest and Vodafone Events Centre. In August 2022, in collaboration with Auckland City Council, they launched the Blue Ocean initiative, successfully removing approximately 3,000 kg of waste from Trimdon Street and the Papakura Stream area.
Church members also collaborate with other Church of God congregations across Auckland, maximizing the impact of their volunteer efforts. In 2019, four churches jointly organized a blood drive, in which around 180 members and citizens participated, resulting in 100 successful blood donors. Since one blood donation can save three lives, this effort helped approximately 300 patients in urgent need of transfusions.
In recognition of their dedication, the volunteers received several awards: Community Volunteer Awards from the Papakura Local Board and the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board;[5][6] Manurewa Volunteer Recognition Award from the Manurewa Local Board in September 2022.[7]
