Features

Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, means “the place where two muddy rivers meet” in Malay. As its name suggests, the city is located at the confluence of the Gombak and Klang Rivers. In the late 19th century, it began to develop as people migrated to the area for tin mining. Today, it has grown into Malaysia’s economic, financial, and cultural hub. Since the 2000s, it has also become one of Asia’s top tourist destinations.[1] As the population expanded, satellite cities such as Petaling Jaya and Ampang Jaya were developed, now forming part of the greater Kuala Lumpur metropolitan area.

The city has a well-developed public transportation system, including the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and monorail networks, providing efficient connectivity for residents and visitors. Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), located to the south, plays a crucial role in accommodating the steady influx of tourists and immigrants. Known for its multicultural society, the city embraces people from diverse ethnic backgrounds, fostering a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere. Among its many landmarks, the Petronas Twin Towers stand out as an iconic symbol of the city, constructed through a collaboration between South Korean and Japanese companies.

Similarly, the Church of God in Kuala Lumpur is a place where members from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds come together in unity. They lead a life of faith based on the “Teachings of Mother,” sharing a common hope for heaven.[2] To support members in their spiritual journey, the Church of God publishes materials in multiple languages spoken in the region, including Malay, Chinese, English, and Hindi, enabling effective study of God’s word. The church also organizes Bible Seminars and Bible Preaching Contests to encourage deeper understanding and fellowship. Following the pandemic, it expanded its outreach through Bible webinars, ensuring that God’s teachings continue to be shared widely.

The members of the Church of God in Kuala Lumpur actively practice the love of Christ by caring for their families and neighbors. They regularly visit nursing homes to clean, serve snacks, and organize cultural events such as singing and dance performances, bringing joy to the elderly.[3] To express appreciation for local firefighters, they delivered snack sets as a gesture of gratitude for their dedication to the community.[4]

On August 11, 2019, the church hosted a Happy Concert With a Mother’s Heart” at The Platform Concert Hall near the church. An orchestra composed of members from Malaysia, Singapore, and Korea performed a harmonious blend of music that transcended nationalities, uplifting the spirits of around 500 attendees.[5]

The church members have also extended a helping hand to those affected by disasters with a family-like heart. In December 2021, when an extraordinary flood devastated the lowland areas of Selangor, ASEZ WAO members from Kuala Lumpur actively participated in the recovery efforts. They helped clean the affected areas and restored 20 flooded homes, bringing hope to the residents. The Shah Alam City Council supported their efforts by providing cleaning tools, trash bags, wheelbarrows, and lunch for the volunteers.

Additionally, the church members have been committed to blood drives in collaboration with the National Blood Centre, supporting patients in need of transfusions.[6] In April 2022, 118 volunteers participated in a blood donation event at the National Blood Centre, with 68 individuals successfully donating a total of 27,200 ml of blood.[7]

Environmental Cleanup and Social Issue Improvement

The Church of God in Kuala Lumpur is dedicated to preserving the city’s environment by organizing cleanups in streets, residential areas, university campuses, and beaches, promoting harmony with nature.[8][9] In March 2013, 185 church members and local residents participated in a cleanup event at Queensbay Beach, located five hours from the city. Supported by the Penang Environmental Agency, the volunteers spent about two hours removing waste and restoring the beach’s cleanliness. In July 2016, Korean members from ASEZ, the Church of God University Student Volunteer Group, visited Kuala Lumpur. Local members joined forces with the Korean volunteers to clean the area of Bandar Mahkota Cheras. Their efforts were recognized by members of Parliament, Kajang City Council, and Cheras District Office, who presented certificates of appreciation for their contribution to creating a dengue-free zone.

Local members actively engage as citizens of an international city, demonstrating concern for global issues and working toward meaningful solutions. Young adults’ activities, led by ASEZ and ASEZ WAO, play a particularly vital role in these efforts. On December 17, 2017, ASEZ in Kuala Lumpur hosted the ASEZ Global Forum on the Implementation of the SDGs at the Sime Darby Convention Centre. Around 140 participants, including ASEZ members, local university students, and Subang Jaya City Council members, gathered to strengthen their commitment to achieving shared global goals.[10] In December 2019, they organized a campaign for UN Human Rights Day at Brickfields Asia College, raising awareness among students, professors, and local citizens. In January 2019, ASEZ WAO members in Kuala Lumpur, along with Korean members visiting during the holidays, visited Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bukit Tadom School, a national primary school located in Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Tadom, Banting, Selangor, Malaysia, which primarily serves the Orang Asli community, the indigenous people of Malaysia. They provided hygiene education, fluoride treatments, and a Korean language and cultural experience event, while also donating bags and school supplies to all students. This initiative led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the school, and educational support activities have continued since then. In January 2020, they organized a “No More GPGP” seminar at Tadom Hill Resort for the students, parents, teachers of Bukit Kemandol School, and city council members, raising awareness about environmental issues.[11]

Even during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, church members extended support by providing face masks and hand sanitizers to 150 households in the Baru Damansara 17A area of Petaling Jaya. ASEZ and ASEZ WAO members also showed their appreciation for frontline healthcare workers by delivering handwritten letters and snacks to the staff at Penang General Hospital, Putrajaya Hospital, University of Malaya Medical Centre, and Batu Gajah Hospital.[12][13][14]
