Features

South Africa, located at the southernmost tip of the African continent, is bordered by both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Much of the country consists of plateaus with elevations ranging between 900 and 1,200 meters above sea level. Boasting diverse natural landscapes—including jungles, plains, and coastlines—South Africa is home to 19 national parks, such as Kruger National Park and Pilanesberg National Park.[1] Additionally, the country features four UNESCO World Heritage Sites[2] and 28 internationally protected wetlands,[3] demonstrating its commitment to environmental preservation and biodiversity conservation.

Since the establishment of the South Africa Mission in 2004, the country has been a melting pot of diverse cultures, with 11 official languages spoken among its people.[4] Following the example of God Elohim, members of the Church of God embrace the Teachings of Mother, practicing virtues such as humility, consideration, and sacrifice. They are united in the Christian mission to spread the gospel of the new covenant. In November 2010, a church was founded in Bellville, east of Cape Town. As the congregation grew, the church moved to a larger temple in December 2014, continuing its mission to serve the local community.

The Church of God in Bellville actively serves its community, guided by the biblical teaching: “Be the salt and the light of the world.” In December 2012, members participated in a citywide clean-up, picking up litter in various areas of Bellville to create cleaner, brighter streets.[5] Continuing their environmental efforts, in September 2016, volunteers walked through the city center, clearing trash from sewers and removing weeds from sidewalks.[6] The church also collaborates with other congregations in Cape Town to support major local and international events, including Cape Town’s world-class cycling tour.[7]

Young adult members of the Church of God in Bellville actively engage in volunteer work through ASEZ WAO. University students and young professionals take part in clean-up campaigns in parks, roads, and rivers, raising awareness about environmental protection and crime reduction.

In September 2021, as part of the “Reduce Crime Together” project, ASEZ volunteers cleaned up a detention pond in the Ravensmeade area, improving the local environment and safety.[8]

In January 2019, a clean-up project took place near Bellville Train Station.[9] Zahid Badroodien, a member of the Cape Town City Council, expressed his gratitude to ASEZ for their efforts in both environmental restoration and public awareness. He praised the volunteers, stating: “If even one person, after seeing your volunteer work, thinks, ‘I should do the same,’ then change has already begun.” In recognition of their efforts, ASEZ received a Certificate of Appreciation.[10][11] Later that year, in July 2019, with support from Cape Town Municipality, volunteers repainted walls along Durtoi Street in Bellville, using materials such as paint, brushes, and rollers provided by the city. Their work brightened the area, contributing to a cleaner and more welcoming environment.[12]

The ASEZ WAO Young Adult Worker Volunteer Group has remained dedicated to community service.[13] In January 2020, more than 120 members participated in a clean-up campaign at the Bellville Central Taxi Stop as part of the “No More GPGP” project, a movement to reduce plastic waste. During the event, they collected 2.9 tonnes of waste.

Jake Colin, a local government secretary who provided garbage bags, gloves, and a collection vehicle for the cleanup, commended the volunteers, saying: “The enthusiasm of these young adults is truly inspiring. Their work will help raise awareness about plastic waste and encourage more people to protect the environment.”[14]

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the “Heart to Heart" campaign was launched in December 2020. Volunteers visited hospitals and health centers in Tigerberg and Bellville, delivering care packages filled with handwritten letters and snacks to express gratitude to frontline medical staff for their dedication to public health.[15][16]

Through its ongoing volunteer efforts, the Church of God in Bellville, Cape Town, has made a meaningful impact on the local community. In recognition of their contributions, the church received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Cape Town Councilor in 2019.[17][18]
