Johannesburg is the capital of Gauteng Province and the largest city in the Republic of South Africa. Known as a vibrant hub of culture and history, the city is home to renowned institutions such as the Johannesburg Art Gallery, which houses over 9,000 works of art, the Apartheid Museum, and the Hector Pieterson Museum. In 2002, Johannesburg hosted the World Summit on Sustainable Development, where representatives from over 190 countries gathered to establish global guidelines for prosperity and progress.
The truth of the new covenant was introduced in Johannesburg shortly after the first Church of God in Africa was established in Cape Town in 2004. As more people came to believe in God Elohim and sought to study the Bible more deeply, the Church of God was established in Johannesburg as well.
Since realizing the existence of God the Mother, members of the Church of God in Johannesburg have been actively engaged in volunteer work, sharing Her love with their neighbors. One example is their joint effort with the Church of God in Pretoria to organize regular blood drives, helping to save lives and raise awareness of the importance of blood donation.[1][2] Their efforts were recognized by the South African National Blood Service, which presented the church with a plaque of appreciation.[3]
Church members are also dedicated to environmental conservation, leading various cleanup campaigns throughout the city and beyond. Young adults in particular, as members of the University Student Volunteer Group (ASEZ) and Young Adult Worker Volunteer Group (ASEZ WAO), take the lead in promoting environmental awareness. Their initiatives range from cleaning busy urban centers to restoring forests and rivers in remote areas.[4][5][6][7][8] In January 2017, ASEZ members were featured on SABC News to introduce their activities.[9] That same month, when they conducted a cleanup near the Kingsway Campus of the University of Johannesburg. City Councilor Genevieve Sherman visited the site to express her gratitude in person, and the campaign drew positive attention from across the community.[10]
During the COVID-19 pandemic in September 2021, ASEZ WAO members launched the Heart to Heart Project to show appreciation for frontline workers. They visited Helen Joseph Hospital and delivered heartfelt messages and gifts to medical staff, administrative workers, and janitors who had supported the healthcare system during the crisis.[11] Sipho Senabe, Chief Director at the Gauteng Department of Health commended the group, saying, “The efforts of young people are making a significant impact in transforming our nation.”[12]
In recognition of their outstanding contributions, ASEZ in Johannesburg received two certificates of appreciation from the Tshwane City Council[13][14] and an additional certificate from the Emfuleni City Council for their exemplary work in environmental protection and community service.
