Features

The Church of God in Los Angeles was one of the first churches established in 1997 when the Church of God began its overseas mission.[1][2] The members are thankful that they have received the truth of the Bible first in North America, and preach the gospel of the new covenant and the love of Christ with a sense of duty. In 1999, the overseas members who first visited the Church of God in Korea were also from the Los Angeles Church. In the early 2000s, through the Overseas Visiting Group program, they visited Korea to study the truth of the Bible and learn the teachings of Mother.[3][4][5][6] As a result, the Los Angeles Church grew rapidly with the members who strengthened their faith, and established branches in Sunland, Orange County, Fresno, Portland, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Riverside, Bakersfield, and Torrance. Currently, the members visit pre-branch churches and branch churches established not only in California but also in Alaska, Japan, and Micronesia, carry out various volunteer activities together, and serve as the salt and light in their communities.

Environmental Cleanups

The members of the Los Angeles Church carry out cleanups on local roads, parks, and rivers to keep the streets bright and clean.[7][8][9] In May 2016, about 600 members worked hard to protect the environment by cleaning up the surrounding area and removing invasive weeds and vines at the Gardena Willows Wetlands Preserve. In December 2012, they cleaned up the streets together with the members of the nearby branch church by removing damaged asphalt debris and garbage in shopping malls and parks.[10]

Volunteer services led by young adults are also active. In May 2021, about 100 members of ASEZ, the university student volunteer group of the church, cleaned up Hollywood Boulevard and Vermont Avenue, collecting about 23,000 liters of garbage such as disposable face masks and medical waste. City Councilor Mitch O’Farrell participated in the cleanup and praised the members’ activities.[11][12] He said, “If our community becomes safe and clean through these activities, the residents will feel comfortable.” In May 2018, ASEZ WAO, the young adult worker volunteer group of the church, cleaned up Redwood Street with Oxnard members near Los Angeles.

Neighborly Love

The members of the Church of God in Los Angeles take the lead in giving a warm helping hand to their neighbors. They continuously hold blood drives to help those who are in critical situations and support the blood supply of local blood centers. In May 2013, members of the Church of God in Los Angeles and nearby local churches collected canned food from their homes and sent a total of 600 boxes of relief supplies to help victims in Oklahoma affected by the tornado. In October 2015, ASEZ held a bottled water donation event for the homeless suffering from dehydration. The members held a booth at California State University, Northridge for three days and delivered a total of 3,909 donated bottled water to the homeless through a nonprofit organization. In November of the same year, they held a blanket-making event and donated 70 handmade blankets to children’s hospital patients.

They constantly visited local nursing homes to give gifts to the elderly and showed a variety of performances to share the love of God Elohim. In July 2013, about 30 student members visited ONEgeneration Senior Enrichment Center and helped create a pleasant environment by cleaning and repainting the facility. When there was a shortage of face masks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the members delivered 300 handmade masks to the officials of the Guided Missile Destroyers of the U.S. Navy and cheered on the military service members who are working hard to protect the country.[13] ASEZ members visited the police station in Inglewood and delivered 250 handmade masks to inmates who were vulnerable to the disease.[14]

In recognition of their dedication to their neighbors and communities, the Church of God in Los Angeles received the Gold President’s Volunteer Service Award from the Obama administration in September 2015.[15] The President’s Volunteer Service Award is given to individuals or organizations that have made a positive impact on the community through volunteer services.[16] Only sincere volunteer service without the expectation of recognition is awarded. Groups that have devoted over 1,000 hours of volunteer service can receive the Gold Award, the highest honor for a group.[17][18] President Obama said in his letter of appreciation, “Thank you for your devotion to service and for doing all you can to shape a better tomorrow for our great Nation.”[15]

In March 2014, the City Council of Los Angeles announced a resolution in honor of the efforts that the Church of God has made to create a safe and livable city, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the World Mission Society Church of God.[19] In addition, the Church of God in Los Angeles received a certificate of appreciation from the Mayor of Los Angeles[20][21] and a certificate of appreciation and citation from the City Council of Los Angeles.[22][23][24]
