Features
Europe was once a stronghold of early Christianity, but today, the Christian population is declining rapidly across the continent.[1] Germany, the birthplace of Martin Luther’s Reformation, has also experienced a significant decrease in its Christian population in recent years.[2]
In contrast to this trend, the Church of God has been steadily growing throughout Europe. Since the 2000s, churches have been established in various German cities, including Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Hamburg. Shortly after a small house church was founded, the Church of God in Munich, Bavaria, was officially established.
Munich, the capital of Bavaria, is one of Germany’s most historic cities and a major hub for population, economy, science and technology. Although largely destroyed during World War II, the city rebounded with rapid economic growth, hosting the 1972 Summer Olympics and the FIFA World Cups in 1974 and 2006. Munich is also a key transportation hub, connected to major cities like Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Berlin, and Passau via the Autobahn, and is home to Munich International Airport. The city boasts numerous multinational company headquarters, cultural institutions such as the Deutsches Museum, and prestigious educational institutions such as Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the Technical University of Munich.
The Church of God in Munich, Bavaria, is known for its vibrant community, particularly among university students and young adults. Its members are actively engaged in environmental cleanups in residential areas, central transportation hubs like Munich Central Station, along the Isar River, and in nearby locations such as the Wöhrder Meadow in Nuremberg. These efforts help raise public awareness about environmental protection and encourage community participation.
A cleanup campaign in Hirschgarten Park gained public attention when it was featured in a local newspaper a week before the event, attracting many residents to join.[3] Another cleanup at Nymphenburg Palace took place on a particularly windy and snowy day, where a passerby, moved by the dedication of the volunteers, spontaneously joined the effort. At the English Garden, where the annual traditional Munich festival "Kocherlball" is held, a festival-goer praised the volunteers in blue vests, calling them "blue angels" as they diligently worked to clean up the area.
The young adult members in Munich actively collaborate with visiting Korean members during school breaks and vacations, exchanging cultural experiences and engaging in meaningful volunteer work for the local community. To ensure continuity in their efforts, they coordinate with local governments to plan future volunteer activities, maximizing the impact of their service.
In the summer of 2017, ASEZ members from Korea conducted a street and alley cleanup campaign in Munich while raising awareness about environmental protection.[4] In 2019, a graduate student from the Technical University of Munich represented Europe at the ASEZ Global Summit in Korea, where participants discussed ways to promote human rights awareness and contribute to creating a crime-free world.[5]
