Features
In the Netherlands, located in Western Europe, about a quarter of the land lies below sea level. The name “Netherlands” literally means “low lands.” Amsterdam, the capital and largest city, was originally a quiet fishing village. In the 12th century, efforts to control flooding led to the construction of a dam at the mouth of the Amstel River, transforming the area into reclaimed land. The city’s name, Amsterdam, originates from a combination of the words Amstel and Dam, reflecting its history.[1]

To make submerged land habitable, the Dutch built dikes and gradually desalinated the soil, creating a sustainable environment for settlement. Similarly, members of the Church of God in Amsterdam diligently preach the word of the Bible—the water of life for the soul—dedicating themselves to making the Netherlands a spiritually fertile land where the flower of life blooms. The church, which began with just a Korean missionary family and two Korean members, grew rapidly as many souls thirsty for the truth were drawn to it each day. A female adult member, who accepted the gospel through the Korean missionary, shared her heartfelt testimony. Reflecting on Amos 8 in the Bible, she described how she had once wandered from sea to sea in search of God’s word and expressed deep joy in finally accepting the truth of the new covenant.
“The commandments of God in the Bible are rooted in love. God must have loved us so much to emphasize keeping His commandments so strongly. Living under God’s love makes me truly happy.”[2]
Amsterdam, where the church is located, is a city where culture and art beautifully blend. It is famous for its extensive canal system, which includes over 100 km of canals, around 90 islands, and more than 1,500 bridges. The city is also home to iconic landmarks such as the Canals of Amsterdam, the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, and the Albert Cuyp Market. Additionally, the Netherlands has the highest bicycle usage rate in the world,[3] and Amsterdam is often called a cyclist’s paradise due to its well-developed network of dedicated bike lanes.
Members of the Church of God in Amsterdam contribute to making the city an eco-friendly cultural hub by encouraging citizens to commute freely and safely while helping to purify the environment. In particular, they have cleaned streets, subway stations, parks, and public facilities near Bijlmer ArenA, as well as Almere, a nearby city, all while sharing their bright smiles. Korean members of ASEZ, the Church of God University Student Volunteer Group, have also visited Amsterdam to carry out volunteer activities alongside local members as part of the Overseas Culture Experience Group during summer and winter vacations. ASEZ members continue to make a positive impact on local communities through street cleanups and cultural exchange activities, fostering unity and goodwill.
